Batavia Public School District 101
Tom Kim was born in Chicago and raised in the city and suburbs, where he graduated from Niles North High School. From there, he went to North Park University, where he achieved his BA in History and teaching endorsement while playing football for four years. During his teaching years, he received his MA in School Leadership from Aurora University and his superintendent endorsement from Loyola University. Tom and his 2 younger brothers were raised by his mother, Insoon, Tom has been married for 14 years and is the proud father of 3 daughters.
Tom currently serves as the superintendent for Batavia Public School District 101. Prior to this, he was the assistant superintendent for Human Resources of Niles Township HS District 219. Before that, he was an associate superintendent for human resources in Community HS District 155 in Crystal Lake. He has also served as a principal, associate principal, athletic director, and social studies teacher. As a member of the Illinois Association of School Personnel Administrators (IASPA), he was named their New HR Administrator of the Year for Illinois in 2019.
English Teacher
Gordon Bush Alternative Center
East St. Louis
Briana Morales is an English teacher at Gordon Bush Alternative Center in East St. Louis. She focuses on empowering her students with personalized, competency-based education. Briana was named an Early Career Educator of Color by the National Council for Teachers of English in 2021 where she developed her trauma-informed poetry curriculum for students. She has served with Teach Plus over the past several years, now a National Research Fellow and Affinity Group Facilitator. She is currently pursuing an EdD in diversity and equity in education at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Briana is the 2023 Illinois Teacher of the Year.
The Sunday evening reception is an informal opportunity to connect or reconnect with friends and colleagues attending I-GROW. The reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Light appetizers and beverages will be provided.
