The purpose of this chart is to assist your school in updating its student handbook. The chart lists changes to your handbook that are suggested or required by new laws, administrative rules and court cases.
All handbook procedures are fully aligned with the Illinois Association of School Board’s PRESS service.
Before updating your handbook: (1) consult with your district’s legal counsel; and (2) check to assure alignment with your school board’s policy manual. This checklist is not a substitute for legal advice.

Prevention of and Response to Bullying, Intimidation and Harassment
|Public Act 98-669 (effective 6-26-14) has made it necessary to update this handbook procedure. We have also incorporated the changes required by Public Act 98-801 (effective 1-1-15). Both of these new laws revised the definition and requirements regarding bullying, intimidation and harassment.||Required|
Sexual Harassment and Teen Dating Violence Prohibited

|Public Act 98-544 (Effective 7-1-14) lowers the compulsory attendance age for student from age 7 (on or before September 1) to age 6 (on or before September 1.) This handbook procedure is updated to comply with the new compulsory law.||Required|

Handbook 6.70-E1 (New) Exhibit: Letter to Parents/Guardians Regarding Access to Student Social Networking Passwords and Websites
|Public Act 98-129 (effective 1-1-14) requires schools to publish in their disciplinary rules circumstances in which the school may require access to social networking passwords or websites. These new handbook procedures implement this law.||Required|
|Pursuant to administrative rules adopted in June of 2013, parents and eligible students may request removal of college entrance exams from the student's academic transcript. This handbook procedure is updated to reflect this change.||Suggested for high schools|
Exhibit: Notice to Parents on Sex Education Instruction
|Pursuant to Public Act 98-441 (effective 1/1/14), sex education must be age appropriate, medically accurate and discuss both abstinence and contraception as a means to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. This handbook procedure is updated to comply with this new law.||Required|
