Dr. Cheryl Watkins is the Chief of Schools for Network 13 where she provides leadership and instructional support to 31 school principals and their assistant principals to impact student achievement. She is responsible for the academic achievement of more than 11,000 students across several communities on the south and southeast sides of the city.Dr. Watkins is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. When she was a teacher, working with children with disabilities, she received local recognition, including the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching, the Kizzy Award, the Kathy Osterman Award for Superior Pubic Service, and the Michael Jordan Education Club Teacher Achiever Award. As an assistant principal, she was inducted into the Dunbar Vocational Hall of Fame. In 2008, as a principal, she was one of two recipients in the state of Illinois to receive national recognition as a winner of the prestigious Milken Award for excellence in education. She also received statewide recognition as a winner of the “Dare to be Great” Award by the Illinois Women in Educational Leadership organization. Cheryl was recently recognized as the recipient of the Margaret Burroughs Legacy Award from the DuSable Museum of African History.
