Through the Principal Recruitment grant program made available by the Illinois State Board of Education, IPA awarded scholarships to 101 applicants from a pool of 275 in June 2022. The program participants represented a diverse group of individuals (24% Black; 20% Hispanic; 50% White; 6% Other) from a variety of school settings (36% rural; 28% urban; 33% suburban; 3% public charter). There were 20 ISBE-approved universities and colleges participating in the program. Each pipeline candidate received up to $14,700 in tuition support over a two-year period as well as two years of mentoring from a veteran Illinois principal, aspiring membership in the Illinois Principals Association, and $1,000 to help defray the cost of substitute teachers and/or registration for program-related activities.

Breana Calloway is currently the Resident Principal at Lenart Regional Gifted Center, a high-performing, selective enrollment school on the south side of Chicago. She started her career in education as a AmeriCorps member with City Year, tutoring elementary students within Chicago Public Schools. She became a teacher in 2017 and taught on the Southside of Chicago for 6 years before transitioning into her current leadership role. Breana earned a B.A. in Sociology from Illinois State University and an M.Ed in Elementary Education from National Louis University.
