The School Leader as Champion for Equity via Diverse Literature: Windows, Mirrors and More

CANCELLED

May 9, 2023, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The books in your school matter… and evidence says that they are overwhelmingly featuring white characters. Lead your school in offering diverse books that shape your students’ minds and lives. School leaders will build knowledge and create action plans around a leader’s role in building and activating diverse libraries of print and digital resources. We will unpack the research, starting with Rudine Sims Bishop’s essay Window, Mirrors and Sliding Glass Doors; hear from experts in the field of diverse children’s literature and the #OwnVoices and #DisruptTexts movements, and learn the role of social media in the movement; understand the role an audit and other racial equity tools in driving an action plan; and identify leadership actions to start and sustain knowledge-building and catalyzing growth and change in the print and digital literature and informational text in libraries, in classrooms and in curriculums.

IPA will deliver this ONLINE training through Zoom. To participate in the virtual workshop, you must have Internet access, a web camera, and a microphone.

You will receive the Zoom training link, handouts and detailed instructions in the registration confirmation from netforum@ilprincipals.org. If you don’t see the confirmation in your inbox after registering, please email workshops@ilprincipals.org.
